Postmodernism design became popular in the 70's. It was a new wave of design that was a reaction to modernism, a style that had many rules and it caused designers to feel trapped. It can be identified in many ways, but mostly recognizable for how lively the style feels and has an absorption of retro and punk styles. Throughout this time around 1980, a new movement called the Memphis Movement developed. The style of work is described as pluralistic, electric, and hedonistic as designers were intrigued with texture, pattern, surface, color and geometry. Founded in Milan, this style was brought to light by the many designers in the group called Memphis Milano. Active from 1980-1987, the Italian design group led by Ettore Sottass was a trivial element in the 80’s style and design. However, the movement did not start with graphic design but it became synonymous with cartoon-like furniture and textiles. The group itself was mostly known for designing postmodern furniture, lighting, fabrics, carpets, ceramics, glass and metal objects. There is some integration in typography and some created typographic collages that create a sense of spontaneity. It was the electric hybrid aesthetic to an anything-goes approach to design.
