"THE RAVEN" REDESIGN

A CONTEMPORARY GOTHIC LOOK TO POE'S "THE RAVEN"

Working with Edgar Allen Poe was really fun, my inspiration for this came from how much I disliked my books version of The Raven. It felt chaotic and hard to read. So when researching formats for my grid, I focused on poetry and story. I wanted a contemporary look to my redesign. I chose Mrs. Eaves for my typeface for the reason that it reminded me of gothic text but also looked new, giving the words a contemporary gothic look. The setting were 12/14.44, using the method of taking the types point size and multiplying it by 1.2. I kept the 1 ¼ inch margins I saw in Dickinson and Chipp Kidd’s books when researching other forms of poetry and modern/contemporary book formats. Added small title and author to the running top header, and folio to the running bottom header. For the cover I kept the same typeface, I added the circles saying nevermore surrounding the title because it is a recurring word the raven speaks to Poe in the poem, and he ends up overwhelmingly surrounded by it.
